online lecture and talk by and with kamil muhammad on urban strategies and informal architecture in the kampung in the north of jakarta

how is jakarta imagined? as a city of 11 million people, jakarta is a pot of competing narratives—forcing kampungs, or urban villages and informal settlements, to articulate themselves as they contest the city’s limit of imaginations and fight against the threat of eviction. architecture is inevitably implicated as it tries to subvert the built form through the reimagining of what it means to live outside of the state. informality becomes a language of subversion. in this talk, i will share the story of how kampungs in jakarta navigate and strategize in mounting their challenge to the city’s dominant imagination.

kamil muhammad is a jakarta-based architect and director of award-winning design/research studio pppooolll and a co-founder of architecture sans frontieres-indonesia. his research focus lies at the intersection of architectural practice and informal urbanism. kamil is a co-curator of the indonesian architects week of the UIA congress 2021 in rio de janeiro.
