in these regular work phases, ongoing choreographic and artistic gestures, performative and installative experiments are created on site. the wasteland becomes a choreographic ground in which the dialog between artists, experts, the local population and non-human actors becomes visible in performative formats. over the months, the project condenses into performances for which the site is starting point, studio, framework and condition.

the performative articulations on the wasteland dissolve the boundaries between art and everyday life, make invisible structures visible and encourage participation. they foster an understanding of public space as a designable, shared place and open up a new view of urban landscapes and their layers through the gradual transformation of the unnoticed area.

in dialog with the constantly changing terrain, a work of art forms, changes and evolves over the seasons in public space.
this leftover space in the middle of the city, framed by rails and roads, marked by facades, hotels and offices, populated by grasses, butterflies and thistles, also served as the setting for HAUNTED LANDSCAPE on an unseen wasteland in 2024.

Aa chronicle on choreographic ground visits this terrain every month. each time, we marvel at the new appearances, movements and choreographies of becoming and passing away. it is always a different place. ahanged, enlivened, embedded in the urban texture and in the various smooth or rough surfaces. here: gravel, earth, moss, grass, herbs or flowers close to the uneven ground or sprouting with pink or purple or blue or white webs of blossoms, open to visiting insects. there: asphalt, rails, concrete and glass.

disappearing into the area. making the area visible; as dancing ambassadors of various events at the location. moving through it like insects. lines sometimes, for orientation. together or separately, the humanoids in the vegetation or on the asphalt. visible, audible, invisible. embodiment as speculation of other bodies with more-than-human choreographies. surveying the environment, drawing in time.

wasteland, waste land, wasted land. elsewhere, rubble and dust.

rain, strong wind. new blossoms are painting the area. the weather as a condition for choreography. measuring the uneven ground with limbs that reach out into the space, as far as the surrounding buildings. or measuring with a blue fabric object that divides the space with the help of two bodies, folds itself or nestles around the bodies. ephemeral structures and sculptures with/of bodies – textile and human – as counterpoints to rectangular building.

images of violently destroyed infrastructures, for example in gaza, confronted daily with the madness of destruction. movement studies as an imagination of violent destruction in the urban space of vienna. what would happen if the buildings around this square were bombed, exploded or collapsed?

movement as an approximation of the long-term consequences… in addition to the horizontal measurement of the various zones right into the interspaces of the buildings, an approximation of possible vertical cosmologies, from the interior of the earth via the grasses to the atmosphere.

with choreographic measurements we approach the overgrown ground. what is physical presence on the 2500 m2 site? how can it reach up onto the skin of the buildings? what are the rhythms of moving bodies in urban space and what resonance do the sounds of the city have in the body? gestures of orientation as relationships to the vertical structures from the underground via the built structures up to the sky. what movements can arise from the grown structures of different plants and how can these be transferred into the space? how do organic (moving) structures meet the rigid orientation of a line running through the space. does the line create time in space? the steps on the blossoming blue speedwell.

PROJECTS of haunted landscape/s:
haunted landscape/s is a multi-format series by claudia bosse (2024/2025) in collaboration with various artists with/about/through wounded landscapes.
WASTELAND dream/s – a chronicle on choreographic ground
is part of it. in HAUNTED LANDSCAPES or the breathing out of earth claudia bosse occupied the stage of tanzquartier wien at the end of october 2024 as a walk-in, performative environment, together with different materials, 5 performers and the sounds of günther auer. in HAUNTED LANDSCAPE on an unseen wasteland, a central residual area became an urban laboratory and venue for a series of visual, musical and performative interventions by claudia bosse with public performance school PPS and invited artists. in the field research project haunted landscape/s – about inner and outer landscapes as part of impulstanz, claudia bosse and the participating dancers explored relationships to landscapes, organisms and movements on unstable ground. claudia bosse’s installation entanglement with a haunted forest interwoven with the forest opened mahler forum 2024 in june 2024 with a musical commentary by günther auer. between the built, the grown, the present and the past, the installation in the forest is freely accessible until the end of october. haunted landscape/s was developed as a site-specific performance with 3 dancers and 2 movement choirs in may 2024 for a derelict building site and ultimately ended in a multimedia installation. in october 2023, claudia bosse developed LANDSCAPE/S as part of the project celebrating trouble. choreographic convention in timișoara (romania) – a lecture performance as an installative spread that became a performative landscape.

the haunted landscape/s series was created as part of the 2022-2025 concept funding programme by stadt wien kultur, the federal ministry of arts and culture, public service and sport, with the support of the district of donaustadt, mahler forum 2024, KÖR Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien and in cooperation with belvedere 21, impulstanz, jugend am werk, wien 3420 and ÖBB.

the cycle ORGAN/ismus – poetics of relations combines modules, motives and methods for the realization of different artistic formats and at the same time wants to build or expand structures. because we can only realize those works for which we are able to find or invent structures.
