About Evocation of Absent Landscapes

In her multisensory installation Evocation of Absent Landscapes at DAS WEISSE HAUS, artist and choreographer Claudia Bosse continues her research project ‚haunted landscape/s‘ with theatercombinat. The ‚haunted landscape/s‘ series considers the planet as an organism scarred by human intervention. Bosse seeks aesthetic means to make the rift created by humans in the living environment perceptible through the senses, and to explore transhuman narratives in collaboration with artists and experts.

In Evocation of Absent Landscapes, Bosse transforms DAS WEISSE HAUS into a walk-in space for absent landscapes. These landscapes are criss-crossed by traces left behind by their human and non-human inhabitants. She conjures up encounters with them, with their fissures and wounds. Salt, sand, mud, wool and hair trickle and drip, occupying the gallery’s vertical and horizontal axes. The spread-out materials meet video works in which bodies encounter landscapes 11.000 km abroad. The encounters attract and repel, tear open and shake. Between the organic and the inorganic, the soft and the fluid, between sound and video, a tangible third place emerges, an experiential, hybrid in-between.

Alongside the opening performance on June 30, the multimedia installation by Claudia Bosse and invited artists will be activated and transformed or haunted by figures that invite alternative interpretations. Through their bodies and voices, they evoke absent landscapes and encourage us to consider the world from a planetary perspective or interpret it differently.

Performance at the opening of the multisensory installation „Evocation of Absent Landscapes“ by Claudia Bosse

On June 30, „Evocation of Absent Landscapes“ opens with a performance featuring Christa Zuna-Kratky, Larry Mey, Lena Schattenberg, Neža Kokalj, and Elias Austaller. The performance is an expanded re-enactment of the very first theatercombinat performance, „Sinn Egal. Körper Zwecklos,“ at Podewil in Berlin in 1997.

Thursday, July 2, 2026, 7:00 PM:
Performance „Evocation of Absent Landscapes“
An evocation of landscapes located 11,000 km away, using voice, movement, video, and sound.
By/with Claudia Bosse and live sound by Günther Auer

In the performance „Evocation of Absent Landscapes,“ Claudia Bosse recalls encounters with Indonesian landscapes, such as the human-made mud volcano in Sidoarjo that partially swallowed a village, or the mines on the active Merapi volcano that continually wound the sacred mountain. She evokes landscapes 11,000 km away, using her voice and body to describe their injuries, topographies, textures, and materialities. She allows the absent landscapes to encounter the present landscape of the installation, which is expanded by the acoustic dimension through the sounds of Günther Auer.
The performance premiered in 2026 at Weld in Stockholm.

Saturday, July 4, 2026, 12:00 PM:
Performance „Voicing the Art“
by Swedish artist and audio describer Louise Ahl.

An unconventional audio-descriptive performance in response to the multisensory installation „Evocation of Absent Landscapes.“ With „Voicing the Art,“ Swedish artist and audio describer Louise Ahl reacts to the installation and speaks the landscapes into the space, utilizing the mediums of art and audio description for blind and visually impaired people.

Thursday, July 9, 2026, 7:00 PM:
Performance „Cracks in Landscapes“
A poetic speculation utilizing movement, text, and materials such as earth, metal, and latex. By and with Claudia Bosse, alongside live sounds by Günther Auer.

„Cracks in Landscapes“ is a modular, performative poem that reconfigures itself with every performance; it has previously been staged in Zagreb in 2025 and Geneva in 2026. Through various texts, movements, and materials, Claudia Bosse, together with the audience, outlines relationships and abysses within landscapes. Between mythical figures, dirty hands, and her own biography, this performance—incorporating earth, clay, salt, and live sound by Günther Auer—unfolds a poetic speculation on what it means to bear witness and the future of our planet.

Saturday, July 11, 2026, 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Finissage of „Evocation of Absent Landscapes“
An eight-hour happening as a performative landscape

For the finissage, Bosse, alongside invited artists and researchers, explores aesthetic means to make the human-made rift with our living environment sensorily experiential. A hosted performative situation that tests „landscape-thinking“ in art in the midst of the installation: Over the course of eight hours, contributions draft transhuman narratives between Neolithic landscapes and war zones, growing matter, landscapes in stone, dances with latex, imprints of earth, and tactile resonances.

With Marissa Perel (interdisciplinary artist working with queerness and dis/ability), Dimitrij Mlekuž (landscape archaeologist), Barbara Imhof (space architect and design researcher), Neža Kokalj (dancer), Martina Ruhsam (dance performance researcher and artist), Carla Rihl (performer and sculptor), Lena Schattenberg (dancer), Yosi Wanunu (artist and director), Kai Feldhammer (interdisciplinary artist), Martina De Dominicis (performer and choreographer), and Adam Czirak (performance theorist and cook).

PROJECTS of haunted landscape/s:
haunted landscape/s
is a multi-format series by claudia bosse (2024/2025) in collaboration with various artists with/about/through wounded landscapes.

HAUNTED LANDSCAPES or the breathing out of earth occupies the stage of tanzquartier wien at the end of october 2024 as a walk-in, performative environment with 5 performers and the sounds of günther auer. In HAUNTED LANDSCAPE on an unseen wasteland, a central residual area becomes an urban laboratory and venue for a series of visual, musical and performative interventions by claudia bosse with public performance school PPS and invited artists. in the field research project haunted landscape/s – about inner and outer landscapes as part of impulstanz, claudia bosse and the participating dancers explored relationships to landscapes, organisms and movements on unstable ground. claudia bosse’s installation entanglement with a haunted forest interwoven with the forest opened mahler forum 2024 in june 2024 with a musical commentary by günther auer. between the built, the grown, the present and the past, the installation in the forest is freely accessible until the end of october. haunted landscape/s was developed as a site-specific performance with 3 dancers and 2 movement choirs in may 2024 for a derelict building site and ultimately ended in a multimedia installation. in october 2023, claudia bosse developed LANDSCAPE/S as part of the project celebrating trouble. choreographic convention in timișoara (romania) – a lecture performance as an installative spread that became a performative landscape.

the haunted landscape/s series was created as part of the 2022-2025 concept funding programme by stadt wien kultur, the federal ministry of arts and culture, public service and sport, with the support of the district of donaustadt, mahler forum 2024, KÖR Kunst im öffentlichen Raum Wien and in cooperation with belvedere 21, impulstanz, jugend am werk, wien 3420 and ÖBB.

the cycle ORGAN/ismus – poetics of relations combines modules, motives and methods for the realization of different artistic formats and at the same time wants to build or expand structures. because we can only realize those works for which we are able to find or invent structures.
