the last IDEAL PARADISE düsseldorf/essen
the last IDEAL PARADISE by claudia bosse is a work about social constellations and political thinking. installation, choreography and performance at the same time, the work combines political presence and history with rituals and myths. in multi-media spaces with videos, objects and sounds, the last IDEAL PARADISE deals with terrorism, territory and incorporation, with projections and constellations of our cultural and political consciousness. with and for spectators, materials are transformed, temporary and fragile communities are formed.
the last IDEAL PARADISE combines material that has been created in a process that span over four years and different continents. it is about nothing less than the order of our present, about community, about the memory of bodies, about forms of violence and the production of history.
the last IDEAL PARADISE jakarta is created in different rooms of the national film studios of indonesia (PFN) in a multi-media setting of objects, sounds and projections developed by claudia bosse for the wardrobes, the area and the big studio in jakarta. in a team with günther auer, as well as the performers from vienna and singapore, and 10 indonesian artists from jakarta, bandung, yogyakarta, denpasar and lampung, this jakarta-version of the last IDEAL PARADISE works on resonances into the present and calls up recent history.
the last IDEAL PARADISE premiered in düsseldorf in 2016 and was invited as one of thirteen productions to the tanzplattform 2018 in essen. now, at the invitation of the goethe institut indonesien, an extended site-specific version is being created for jakarta. this version is inscribed in the rooms of the former national film studios of indonesia, where images for the imagination of a cultural identity were produced. first films were shot here during the dutch colonial period, then under japanese occupation during the second world war. later, images for the young nation under sokarno were created here, replaced by images for the new order regime, which controlled the country until 1998 and had to resign after protests. the history of the studios is intertwined with the history of indonesia, its image production: from educational films, schmaltz and musicals to political propaganda films against the communists, who legitimized mass killings, to advertising films for cafés. today, it is said, ghosts inhabit these rooms, animate them. and if the electricity fails, they are responsible for it. in september 2020, the complex is to be demolished and give way to a new film hub.
the last IDEAL PARADISE brings together different stages of this multi-year process: IDEAL PARADISE began in 2015 as an installation with interviews from cairo and athens reflecting the political situation and social upheavals. at the weltmuseum wien, rooms of the new hofburg were filled with material from the ethnographic collection, objects and videos. the work spread out nomadically in urban space, set up stations in the tanzquartier wien, and unfolded a performative landscape in cucharest. in the former post loading station in düsseldorf, claudia bosse, together with performers and a local choir, combined these stations and materials to form the last IDEAL PARADISE.
after claudia bosse's lecture performance the making of the last IDEAL PARADISE at the indonesian dance festival 2018 and a workshop in salihara at the invitation of the goethe institut with 14 indonesian female artists, as well as a research trip to indonesia in may 2019, the last IDEAL PARADISE jakarta is a further step of this multi-format work.
